Getting there

It’s amazing how little things make a big difference. A new chair for working on – what a change. So in the last week I’ve updated the desk the chair etc – the living room is almost ready. Ouch – well now I have also replaced my extension cable the last one just fused mid-blog).

Well – I was quiet over Christmas – but I managed  to drive home and back. Quite an interesting journey. The snow was freezing as it hit the car – so much so that I ended up with a lump of ice trying to wipe the windscreen. I was really happy that I had filled up with -70 degree screen wash. It jut about coped. There were queues of trucks stranded on the road. 5000 km journey in all. It was good to see everybody.

My Christmas presents were interesting this year. I have a monkey that screams and a star named after me – yes a star has my name…

I got back to Vienna in time for a party to celebrate new year, and then managed to get up in time to see the new year concert at the rathaus (they show it on a big screen). Quite a busy time overall. But now I’m back.

A long day out of the office

Well, it’s started to snow. Been threatening all week. I decided it was a good time to put together a new desk for the house. It’s surprising how long it takes. Still – at least I don’t get to stand in the snow. The desk makes for a much better sitting position than the old one. Much easier to relax and type.

I alsö realise that bird feeding is a much bigger pastime here than in Britain. Quite interesting – the local supermarket sells 5kg sacks of bird food. There are several different varieties. Actually there are more varieties of bird food than most other items on the shelves.  I remember last year struggling on a hill walk through deep snow just to find an elderly lady in the middle of the woods tying up bags of food.

Oh well – busy week ahead – early bed tonight.

The problem with age.

I’ve been watching one foot in the grave recently. An interesting comedy about getting old. I’ve also been going through my old photo albums to put more stuff on this web site. My first visit to the USA was 1993 and I was looking at some of the photos of my trip. It was a six week tour covering Los Angeles to Seattle down to Miami and the Bahamas. I got to the end of the photo album and there was an extra photo which was a different size. It was obviously given to me. It was a girl on the beach. I have absolutely no idea who she is. Can’t even remember getting the photo. My best guess is that it might be somebody called Helga from Germany. So here it is – if anybody can tell me who it is please do.

The love affair with the phone.

It’s interesting how many people in this country drive while talking on the phone. Not only that. They talk on the phone while doing all sorts of things. I saw a mother trying to get a baby in a pushchair onto a bus while talking on the phone. There seems to be a real fascination with mobile phones.  The ability to track friends using their phone number has been around for a long time. It’s quite easy to avoid the use of a landline. Vending machines at railway stations can be activated by a text message. I can’t quite get that excited. I must be a ludite.

Another day, yet another pound

Another night out at the good Vienna restaurants in the hills. More weight.

Got home and put on a dvd. Interesting – it starts with a breakout from prison near where I used to live. I still remember the warning siren that was used to alert people of breakouts.

Another day another pound

Another day at the office. I take over as on-call for the next week today. A long day – but with three brits in the meeting I get to go out for a meal – another pound added to my weight….

Old music

I’ve been taking time going through all my old CDs one by one. It’s one of the things I wanted to do when I was here – go through all my music collection. I particularly want to put all my old albums on hard disk.

Starting with the CDs is easiest – they need very little work to convert them. Vinyl is a lot more work – getting rid of the mechanical noise isn’t the same for any two albums.

Anyway – I digress. I was really astounded this weekend by some of the CDs I started to play. I can’t actually remember listening to them before – and some are so good. When I start filling the music page I’ll list some.

I played the last concert of Larry Norman this weekend. He was so strange at times – but his music really made a difference to me. A lot of people talk about So long Ago the Garden as being his best album, well I guess that’s possibly correct – but I still like Something New Under the Son, the blues in that has made me feel good a lot of times.Such a pity he’s gone. I only got to see him a few times in concert, and bumped into him only once (on a wooden plank crossing a stream in a Northampton field).

The first post

The start of the new website. Seems to have gone okay so far, and it has a blog option, so that sounds good. Give it a try.

I’ve had a few days off work this week. Managed to get my filing up to date for the first time in over ten years.

Did a nice tour on Tuesday – Wietra looks like a really nice town.
