Nearing completion – and a tough question to answer

It’s a good term for house buying – completion. My bank account is now a little bit emptier than before as the money starts to change hands. I had another look at the brochure last night – and I realised I had missed some of the features of the house – that make it even more desirable. I had seen the office, but had missed the amount of window space and light it allows. Only one major problem seems to remain. Red or Blue. I have been warned that this is a major issue. Of course Kenny will need to be a factor in this. So which should it be? I mean, this could be a real disaster if I choose the wrong one. I could be an outsider for ever… I think I need to take advice on this. Which one do you think?

99 to go

That’s working days before I go back to the UK.  Then there is another 10 at least when I will be away on travel. Not really that much time when you think of it. But I have 164 weekdays left – so that means 65 weekdays not working. Now that is a more interesting number. I have no idea how I am going to arrange the holidays yet – tonight is my night to sort all of this out. where should I go, what should I do? I’m not sure I can fit that much free time in to my life – great to have the challenge.

Whatever I decide, I will be having a relaxing final 6 months in Austria.

Everything in order

I’ve had time to read the legal papers. The answers to the extra questions are back. So it looks like everything will be posted back to the UK by tomorrow. So it really does look like early December will be the start of my new seaside life in the UK. Could be interesting – it will probably mean Christmas in the UK. the more I get to hear about the area I want to live in the more it sounds really pleasant.

Four nature reserves within walking distance. Never lived at the coast before. Suppose I need to get used to sand…

One step closer to home

So the final paperwork is on its way to me. Sign this and return it and all I need to do is agree the date to collect the keys. The seller wants to finish everything by this Friday, but I think it might be two more weeks before it’s all finished. I guess that means I could have Christmas in my new house.

I’m wondering whether it will be worth getting a frequent flyer ticket for the tunnel, and maybe fitting the car with a trailer. Need to do a little longer term planning. Not sure how many trips it will take.

I also need to get to the flea market to start selling stuff I don’t want to take back with me. I think I’ll be getting rid of another quarter of half ton of old junk. Looks like my trip to the USA national parks over the new year will be off. Shame – I was really looking forward to it.

So – does anybody want to spend a few days near the seaside?

The chimney sweep cometh

So tomorrow I have a visit from the Rauchfangkehrer. A strange concept for Brits. Four times a year the chimney sweep comes to check the chimney, one time in the year is the  Hauptkehrung, which is the main inspection. You must have one HK in the year. Strange idea.

The end is nigh?

So after a year of playing with Facebook I move back to a blog. The reason, well, I think the days of Facebook may be limited.

A long time ago, before what we now know as the internet, I wrote a paper for the office – I suggested looking at standardizing on TC PIP, I suggested broadband as the technology to look for, I even predicted VOIP and who was likely to take the market lead. In those days people used the internet to send emails – the web was hardly known. It wasn’t that I was an IT genius or anything, it was just common sense to me. I guess if I had bought shares I would have made a fortune.

In the same way I would never have bought shares in Facebook. You see, for one, there will be an EarPad, or a NoseJournal, or something else coming along in the near future that will have something better. On top of that Facebook makes it’s profit from push advertising. In my experience junk mail, spam and other forms of push advertising just do not work. The desperation to increase profits is becoming more and more obvious, with people having to work harder to find free ways of sharing information. The free options appear to be closing to people. And that new service that will start soon will most likely offer free something.

Facebook in one sense is an option for somebody that doesn’t want to build a webpage, or blog or something similar. Myspace seems an interesting compromise, it offers the ability to build a personal space, and offers social networking. But still I can’t see a good financial model behind it.

The more I have been thinking about it the more I have been wondering how big a difference there is between Facebook and the mail list collections used by spammers. The concept is to offer people something that will encourage them to release their identity. These details are then collected and can then be traded to others that can force advertising on them. Is this really a social network, or is it just a complicated form of phishing? My guess is that the changes Facebook will need to make to stay attractive will not allow them to make the profit they need. Perhaps because of anti-spam laws if nothing else.

And what is the future, well, perhaps there will be a way to operate as profits fail. Or perhaps the system will close overnight. What happens when the Facebook we all love closes in ten minutes? So today I used by yahoo account to download all my contacts from Facebook and transfer them into my email address book. And today I switched back to my blog. I will still keep Facebook running, but I think it is time to get prepared in case it doesn’t.

My microwave goes backward

There was a lightning strike – and afterwards my microwave started going odd. When it’s on the plate stands still. when it’s off the plate rotates. So it’s time to take it to the tip. It got me thinking – I bought it from somebody that worked for me – she left two years ago. She’s back in Japan. I looked up her address – Sendai. So I emailed and sent text messages. Eventually I got a reply, with photos. Unbelievable. It brings it home.

Somebody came to the office from Japan. He is normally bouncy and happy. As he spoke about the problems there were tears in his eyes.

I get the feeling we don’t know just how bad it really is.

How big is a coffee cup?

Big enough to soak a bed if you miss the bedside table. Ah well – who needed to sleep early.

Summer again

It really is strange weather. How warm can it get in Feb. Anyway – it means trips to the snow are a bit limited. The up side is that I get to wash my car… is that an upside? Travelling to London for Valentines day. Then it’s into more work for another 3 months. I think I need a day off – might try sunbathing this week if the weather keeps getting warmer.

Moving on

Apparently I have reached that stage in life. I didn’t realise there was a special stage – but in austria it seems there is. And I’ve reached it… All because I decided to get rid of about 200kg of books that have been sitting in storage for 15 years – something to do with growing up apparently.

Anyway – I also discovered that practical joker in German translates as “Louse boy”. What a cool name.
